So skip the trial-link hunt. My rule: use Free until it hurts, then pay for one month on purpose and decide.
Say a friend who runs a small herb farm is on Free this week. What do I tell her to throw at it?
Just do some research, heavy research. You ask mad questions, summarize this, do this, research that. What do you think about this?
You may hit a couple of roadblocks because you don’t get the best model, but it’s still pretty smart.
What Free already gives you, and what each plan costs
Prices and plan lines from OpenAI’s pricing page, read October 18, 2026.
Free also got a model upgrade this month. Since October 8, Free chats run on GPT-6 Luna, per OpenAI’s release notes: “Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna.”
One mix-up on OpenAI’s side: its own Free tier FAQ still says GPT-5.6 Luna. Two pages, two model names. The pricing page and release notes are the newer of the two.
Ads may also appear on Free in some countries, per that same FAQ. The full plan-by-plan breakdown lives in ChatGPT Free vs Plus, and Go vs Plus covers the cheap middle tier.
The 4 real ways to get Plus free, and who qualifies
All four come from OpenAI’s help center. None of them is a public link anyone can use.
- An offer in your app or email, or a friend’s invite. OpenAI says it “may make available to eligible users the ability to invite their friends and family to a free, limited-duration trial.” Details arrive “through email or from within ChatGPT,” and “generally, only users on the free plan can accept the free trial invites.” (Promo and invites FAQ)
- A partner promo code. Partners hand these out by SMS or through their own portal, and some only work if you’ve never had Plus. OpenAI tells you to confirm checkout shows $0.00 before you complete the purchase. (Plus promotions)
- US college students: four free months. Verified through SheerID, claim by October 31, 2026, card required, then it renews at the normal Plus price. The full rundown is in the ChatGPT student discount. (Back to School offer)
- US service members, veterans and retirees: one free year. Verified through ID.me, for people who left active duty in the past 12 months or will in the next 12. (Service member terms)
Go and Pro have no trial. Go is $8 a month. The free Go year was an India promo from late 2025, and its old help article now redirects to the general Go page, so don’t plan around it. I found no documented trial for Pro or for Business either.
Anything sold as a “free Plus link” on a deal site is none of these. OpenAI’s terms say codes “may not be duplicated, sold or transferred.” If the offer isn’t in your own account, your own email or on chatgpt.com, skip it.
Two traps before you start a free month
Trap one: canceling early can end it right away. From OpenAI’s Plus promotions page:
“If it was a free promotion, your access may end immediately upon cancellation. If it was a discount promotion, you will retain access for any remaining time in your current paid billing cycle.”
So the “claim it and cancel right away to be safe” move can cost you the whole free month. Set a phone reminder two days before renewal instead.
OpenAI says to cancel “at least 24 hours before renewal,” on the same platform you subscribed on. And: “You can’t cancel through the ChatGPT mobile app.”
The student offer runs on different rules. Cancel it and you keep Plus to the end of that monthly period, but the remaining free months are gone.
Trap two: pay-and-refund is not a trial. OpenAI’s refund page says payments “are generally non-refundable.” A discretionary refund needs an unused subscription, a request within seven days, and “no substantial use.” Dissatisfaction alone doesn’t qualify.
The exception is the EU, UK and Turkey, where you get a prorated refund if you cancel within 14 days of purchase.
So would I still tell you to take a free Plus month if one pops up in your app, knowing it can end the second you cancel? That’s fine. That’s fair. Yes, get it.
Just don’t cancel it on day one. Use it like a month you paid for, and decide before it renews. When you do want out, how to cancel ChatGPT Plus shows every place the button lives.
And if no free month ever shows up, I wouldn’t sweat paying. So many people spend some dumb shit on twenty dollars that to me is negligible. You’re debating on something that delivers way more value that can actually make you money.
What to test on Free before you pay
My test is the one up top: heavy research, a lot of questions, real stuff from your week. Then watch where it stops you.
One fix to how I usually put it. I tend to say you’ll eventually burn out your usage on Free. On plain text chat you won’t: OpenAI lists Free text chats as unlimited, “subject to abuse-prevention safeguards.” What runs out is everything around the chat.
Steal this, a one-week Free test:
- Paste a long document. Free takes about 12 pages of text in one message, Plus about 40. If your reports run longer, you’ll feel it.
- Upload a file and ask about it. File uploads have their own limit on Free.
- Run one deep research question. Free gets a limited number.
- Make an image, or talk to it by voice. Both are listed as “Limited” on Free.
If you keep hitting those walls, that’s your signal. I’ve said it before: “if you constantly get logged out and or maxed out with the usage limit then that’s when it’s a good sign to consider upgrading.”
One small perk if a wall hits mid-task: OpenAI’s Free FAQ says your usage resets when you upgrade.
My rule: pay for one month on purpose, then decide
Let the pain talk. That’s always my rule. When Free starts costing you time, pay for one month on purpose. Maybe you just need it for that month.
A paid month is the cleanest trial there is. OpenAI’s cancel page says “after an ordinary cancellation, paid features remain available until the end of the current billing period.” So a paid month you decide to end still runs the full month. A free promo might not.
When the month is up I think you look at the progress. Are you better off without it? Are you better with it?
The 60-second version, from my Shorts: The rule I use to tell if my AI subscription pays for itself.
The progress I mean is everyday stuff. You can have it monitor price changes, your budget, your spending, help you plan groceries. That alone can save you, even make you money in many ways.
Two checks on that list. Finances in ChatGPT, the part that connects your accounts and looks at spending, reached Free and Go users in the US on October 2, 2026. Test that one before you pay.
Price watching runs on scheduled tasks. OpenAI’s pricing table lists those for Go and Plus and marks them “No” on Free, while an August release note says Free gets up to three. Check your own account.
And it’s subsidized. My rough guess is your $20 gets you something like 5x what $20 buys straight through the API, maybe a hundred bucks’ worth of credits, I don’t know. That’s my estimate, not a number OpenAI publishes.
My own path was the boring one. I started on Free, then paid the $20. Even ChatGPT’s $20 plan gave me generous limits, I was able to test a LOT on just the 20. I only moved up to Pro later, for Codex.
My own ChatGPT billing pane, September 5, 2026. Plan, limits and reset dates in one place.
If you’re still on the fence about the paid plan itself, is ChatGPT Plus worth it is the full decision.
So, is there a ChatGPT free trial? You already have it. Use Free hard for a week, and when it gets in your way, pay for one month, look at your progress, and keep it or cancel. That’s it.
Where this comes from
Every price, offer and rule here comes from OpenAI’s own pages, read October 18, 2026. The billing pane is my own account, captured September 5. The pay-for-one-month rule is mine.
I haven’t tried a free Plus promo, a partner code, or the student or veteran offers. Those parts are OpenAI’s terms, not my experience.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free trial for ChatGPT Plus?
Not a public one. OpenAI only runs campaign offers: in-app or email invites, partner promo codes, four free months for verified US college students (claim by October 31, 2026), and a free year for eligible US service members and veterans. Most need a card on file and renew at the normal price unless you cancel.
Is there a ChatGPT Pro free trial?
Not one OpenAI documents, as of October 18, 2026. Pro starts at $100 a month, with higher tiers at $200 and $500. I found no documented trial for ChatGPT Business either.
Is ChatGPT Go free?
No. Go is $8 a month. A free 12-month Go promo ran in India in late 2025, but its old help article now redirects to the general Go page, so don't plan around it.
Do I need a credit card for a free ChatGPT Plus month?
Often, yes. OpenAI says some promotions require a valid payment method, and the student offer always does. When the free period ends, it renews as a paid subscription on that card unless you cancel.
Can I cancel a free ChatGPT Plus trial early?
You can, but on a free promotion OpenAI says your access may end immediately when you cancel. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, on the web or in the app store you subscribed through. OpenAI says you can't cancel in the ChatGPT mobile app.
Can I get a refund on ChatGPT Plus?
Rarely. OpenAI says payments are generally non-refundable. A discretionary refund may be possible within seven days of the charge for an unused subscription with no substantial use, and dissatisfaction alone does not qualify. EU, UK and Turkey residents get a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase.
