Chris pays for it
Short answer
Yes, if you’re a U.S. college or grad student and claim by October 31, 2026. OpenAI gives you four free months of ChatGPT Plus. You verify with SheerID, add a card, and it renews at $20 a month. Not eligible or too late? There’s no student price, and the cheapest paid plan is Go at $8.

ChatGPT Student Discount (2026): 4 Free Months of Plus, Who Qualifies, and the $8 Fallback

My take: I would tell them to grab it. As a student I would have been using that for research and just building it.

Definitely not just writing my reports or everything, but doing research and even learning. Especially to learn with complex subjects in school.

You have your personal tutor in the pocket. Something people take for granted.

Where I’m coming from: I’m not a student, so I can’t claim this. I pay for ChatGPT Pro, and here’s my billing pane today.

ChatGPT desktop app, Settings, Usage and billing, Your plan row reading ChatGPT Pro 200 at $200 a month My ChatGPT billing pane, October 18, 2026.

Published October 18, 2026. Checked that day against OpenAI’s, Anthropic’s and Google’s own pages, linked inline.

Every student and cheap option, side by side

You qualify if you’re enrolled at a U.S. college, full-time or part-time

OpenAI’s Back to School help article says the offer is for “current full-time and part-time college and graduate students enrolled at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions.” SheerID decides whether your school and enrollment count.

Depending on your school, SheerID checks trusted records, sends you through your school’s single sign-on, or asks for documents.

It’s U.S. only. The 2026 help article names U.S. schools and nothing else, so Canada and everywhere else are out this round.

Here’s the claim flow as OpenAI documents it:

  1. Open the Back to School offer page in a web or mobile web browser.
  2. Sign in to the ChatGPT account you want the offer on.
  3. Follow the SheerID prompts to verify your enrollment.
  4. Come back to the offer flow and finish activation. If you’re starting a new Plus subscription, add a card when it asks.

Three things that trip people up. Your ChatGPT account does not need your school email. The offer lands on whichever account is signed in, and OpenAI says it is “unable to change the account the promotion was applied to.” And if you used an earlier student promo, you can still claim this one.

Three catches before you hand over your card

OpenAI help center Offer terms block: claim by October 31, 2026, redeem once, four free monthly billing periods, $20 a month after, remaining months forfeited on cancel OpenAI’s offer terms, captured October 18, 2026.

Cancel early and you lose the rest. With most free trials you cancel on day one so you can’t forget. Don’t do that here. OpenAI’s terms say “Any remaining promotional months are forfeited when the cancellation takes effect.” Put a reminder on your calendar for month four instead.

App Store and Google Play billing is blocked. If your Plus is billed through your phone’s store, OpenAI says to cancel through the store, keep Plus until that period ends, then come back and check the offer is still open. With the October 31 cutoff, don’t sit on that one.

The offer page says “ChatGPT Work,” and it’s still Plus. The offer page sells “4 months of ChatGPT Work on us. An $80 value.” The help article clears it up: four free months of ChatGPT Plus, “including access to ChatGPT Work and other Plus features.” The $80 is four months of Plus at its normal price.

Month four: keep paying only if you’d miss it

When the four free months run out, you have three moves. Cancel and land on Free. Switch to Go at $8. Or keep Plus at $20.

My rule is the same one I use for everything on free: use the free one, and if you constantly hit free limitations, that’s the telltale sign to upgrade.

Four months is long enough to know. If you’re opening it every week for research and learning, the tutor earned the money. If you used it twice, let it go back to free.

One timing detail from the terms: cancelling keeps Plus through the end of the current billing period. Cancel during month four and nothing free is left to forfeit. If you’re moving down instead, ChatGPT Go vs Plus shows what the cheaper tier drops, and how to cancel ChatGPT Plus walks the buttons.

Missed October 31? Start on free and let the pain tell you

There’s no student price after the offer closes. So what about a student who missed it and needs every dollar? I’ll still point him to the free but I’ll eventually tell him to upgrade. The pain will force him anyways.

ChatGPT pricing page plan cards on October 18, 2026: Free at $0, Go at $8 and Plus at $20 a month, with each plan's top features ChatGPT’s pricing page, captured October 18, 2026.

Free is a real starting point now. OpenAI’s pricing page lists “Unlimited text chats with GPT-6” on Free, subject to abuse guardrails, with limited uploads, images, voice and deep research.

Go adds “More messages with tools, More uploads, More image creation, More voice chats, Longer memory,” and “may include ads.” Plus adds “Advanced reasoning models with GPT-6”: Go gets GPT-6 Luna, but not Astra or Sol.

If the wall you keep hitting is uploads and images, Go is the cheaper step. If it’s the hard thinking, look at Plus. The full breakdown is in ChatGPT Free vs Plus.

And keep your eyes open. I would just tell them to be looking at it for more promos and eventually they’ll have more. That’s my guess, not a promise. What I can point to: OpenAI’s own FAQ talks about “an earlier student promotion,” and this is the 2026 one.

Claude has no student discount, and Google is running one through December

My gut says look into Claude or whichever AI is running the promo. Here’s what their own pages said on October 18, 2026.

Claude has no student plan. Claude’s pricing page lists Free at $0 “for everyone” and Pro at $17 a month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 billed monthly. Its Education plan is “a comprehensive university-wide plan for an institution,” so your school buys it, not you.

If you’re weighing Claude Pro against ChatGPT Plus, I compared them in Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus, and the free tier is covered in Claude’s free plan.

Google is running a student promo right now. Google’s student page offers eligible U.S. college students 18 and up a free year of Google AI Pro. The fine print: “Redeem until December 31, 2026. Valid form of payment required at sign-up,” and it charges $19.99 a month after the trial unless you cancel.

That’s Google’s word, not mine.

Teachers and schools get their own free plans

ChatGPT for Teachers. OpenAI’s teachers help article, updated just before this page went up, says the plan is “free through June 2028 for verified U.S. K-12 educators.” Older launch coverage says June 2027, so trust the newer help article. The article also says plainly: “This plan is not for students.”

Claude for Teachers. Anthropic’s Claude for Teachers article gives verified U.S. K-12 educators “a full year of free access” if they sign up by June 30, 2027, with Pro-level features. Also educator-only.

ChatGPT Edu. This is the plan universities buy through OpenAI’s sales team. There’s no individual sign-up and no public price on the Edu page. Before you claim anything, check whether your school’s login already gets you in.

A tutor in your pocket, free for four months

You have your personal tutor in the pocket, and for four months it costs you nothing. Grab it before October 31, use it for research and learning, not just writing your reports, and set that month-four reminder.

After that, start on free. The pain will tell you when to pay. More plan breakdowns live in the Claude Guides hub.

Where this comes from

The offer terms come from OpenAI’s Back to School help article and offer page, and the prices from OpenAI’s, Anthropic’s and Google’s own pages, all read October 18, 2026. What’s mine is the verdict and my own billing pane.

I’m not a student, I haven’t claimed this offer, and I’ve never paid for Go.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a ChatGPT student discount in 2026?

Yes, until October 31, 2026. OpenAI's Back to School offer gives eligible U.S. college and graduate students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, verified through SheerID. After that it renews at $20 a month unless you cancel. There is no permanent student price on OpenAI's pricing page.

Is ChatGPT Plus free for students?

For four months, if you are a current full-time or part-time student at an eligible U.S. degree-granting school and you claim by October 31, 2026. You need a valid payment method to activate it. You are not charged during the four free months, then Plus renews at $20 a month.

What happens if I cancel the ChatGPT student offer early?

You keep Plus through the end of the current monthly billing period, and you lose every free month that is left. OpenAI's offer terms say remaining promotional months are forfeited when the cancellation takes effect, so set a reminder for month four instead of cancelling on day one.

Do I need a .edu email on my ChatGPT account?

No. OpenAI says the email you use with SheerID can be different from the email on your ChatGPT account. The offer lands on whichever ChatGPT account is signed in during the claim, and OpenAI cannot move it to another account afterward.

Can I get the student offer if I pay through the App Store or Google Play?

Not while your subscription is store-billed. OpenAI's FAQ says to cancel through the store, keep Plus until that billing period ends, then come back and check whether the offer is still available.

Does the ChatGPT student offer work in Canada or outside the U.S.?

No. OpenAI's help article limits the 2026 offer to students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions. Outside the U.S. there is no ChatGPT student price, so the cheapest paid plan is Go.

Is there a Claude student discount?

Not for individual students. Claude's pricing page lists Free at $0 and Pro at $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly, with no student tier. Anthropic's Education plan is bought by a university for its students and staff, and Claude for Teachers is for U.S. K-12 educators only.

Do teachers get ChatGPT free?

Verified U.S. K-12 educators do. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT for Teachers is free through June 2028, though older launch coverage says June 2027. The plan is not for students.
