ChatGPT Pro $100 vs $200 vs $500 (2026): The Bulk Discount Is Gone, So Buy the Smallest Bucket That Fits

I’m on $200 right now. And $500? I cannot afford it. That’s where I cap. I’m not making that much money yet, so I wish I could do the 500.

In September I was on $100, after dropping from $200. After OpenAI’s dots release I went back to $200, burned it anyway, and on October 2 I was sitting at 2% of my week. That story is the second half of this page.

Every Pro tier now costs $20 per Plus of usage

That grandfathered column was the only discount on the ladder. It’s the part that got cut.

Know where each number comes from. OpenAI’s Pro tiers page prints the prices and the order, and no multiples. The 5x and 10x come from OpenAI’s Tibo Sottiaux, in his post on X on September 29: “Plus = 1X Pro 100 = 5X Pro 200 = 10X.”

The 25x is the number OpenAI gave for Pro 500 at DevDay, quoted from its DevDay 2026 recap. As of October 2, OpenAI’s help, pricing and recap pages no longer print it. If OpenAI changes these, the math changes. The live numbers sit on the AI plan tracker.

If you’re on $200, your allowance drops after October 29

OpenAI reopened $200 to new subscribers after pausing it on September 10. New sign-ups get a lower allowance than the old $200, and OpenAI says that’s “to reflect our increasingly efficient models.”

If you had an active Pro 200 plan at any point from September 22 through 10 a.m. Pacific on September 29, you keep the old allowance through October 29. After that you move to the lower one. Same $200.

Use the month you have left to find out what you really need:

1. Open Settings, then Usage, and watch one normal week. Not a launch week.
2. If you end the week with more than half left on the old allowance, the new $200 still covers you, because it’s half the size.
3. If you end with more than three quarters left, $100 probably covers you. A quarter of the old 20x is 5x.
4. Change tiers under Settings, then My Plan, before the bill renews.

People are mad, and the quotes are fair. AndyAlvarezDev, an existing $200 subscriber, on OpenAI’s forum: “Same price, half the product.” UCA, who uses it for research and translation: “What I object to is reducing the recurring value of the $200 plan.”

My take is different. I think people are complaining for no reason. If it feels the same, why are you complaining? That’s just entitlement. Take what you got or don’t use the model at all.

The fact behind my take: OpenAI’s new GPT-6.1 Sol does near-Astra work at a fifth of Astra’s token price, per The Next Web. The bucket got smaller. What you pour in got cheaper. Whether it feels the same depends on which model you pour.

What burned my $200 was Astra, and GPT-6.1 Sol fixed it

In September this page said I’d dropped to $100 and didn’t regret it. That held for a few weeks. Then OpenAI shipped dots, its always-on agents, which are on Pro and not Plus. I dropped Grok Bot and went back to $200 for them.

I’m in the 200 and even then I burned it, because I was using Astra, which is good, but it’s more token intensive.

OpenAI says the same thing in drier words: usage depends on the model, the context, the reasoning and the tools it runs. GPT-6.1 Sol is rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex, starting with Pro, and it hit my account when I had about half my week left.

I switched all my tasks to 6.1, so then it started to be normal. It lasted me a few days going hard. So I can imagine a full 100% will last me a while.

Then came October 2. I’m literally at two percent as we speak. No, I don’t buy credits. I have two resets. So why would I? I’ll wait it out.

$500 is for people whose AI already pays them back

Here is what the extra $300 buys over $200: 15 more Plus-sized units of usage, at the same $20 each, and Astra Ultrafast.

Ultrafast is a faster service tier of the same GPT-6 Astra, not a smarter model. OpenAI’s release notes put it in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Regular Chat isn’t on that list.

OpenAI’s help page says it uses your allowance at 8 times the Standard rate, and buying credits on $100 or $200 doesn’t unlock it. How fast the meter drains is in GPT-6 Astra usage limits.

So would I pay $500 if I could? Yes, I would do it. You just need a specific use case.

I think people who are gonna benefit from it are solopreneurs who are making real money from AI. My math is simple: if you spend $10 or $50 in usage and get $1,000 back, it makes no sense not to do it. That’s not me today.

And plenty of heavy users stop lower. Robdel12 on Hacker News: “$200 was the top for me.” He mostly uses Luna and can’t tell the difference for what he asks.

Cheaper moves before you go up a tier

• Change the model before the plan. In Work and Codex, GPT-6.1 Sol is the cheap switch. That one move is what made my $200 last.
• Wait for the reset. OpenAI’s help page says to use another model or wait, and Support can’t reset limits for you. My usage screen holds banked resets, and I use them.
• Buy credits for a one-off spike. Credits cover Codex, ChatGPT Work and the Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps, under Settings, then Usage. I don’t buy them, but one heavy week is cheaper this way than a bigger tier.
• Go up for one month, then back down. Every tier is monthly, so a heavy build month costs one bill, not a year.
• Split across two providers. Two subscriptions means two separate buckets. Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro prices that out at $100 and $200.

Let the wall pick your tier, not the price tag

I cap at $200 because that’s what my money says right now, not because $500 is a bad deal. Every bucket costs the same per scoop now. You’re only choosing how big.

My rule hasn’t changed: let the pain tell you. Don’t upgrade because you think you’ll need it. I bought $200 once on that logic and didn’t use it. Move up when all three are true:

1. You hit the wall repeatedly, not once during a launch week.
2. No reset or model switch solves it.
3. The waiting is costing you real working time, and you can feel it.

Open your usage screen this week, watch one normal week, and buy the smallest bucket that gets you to Sunday.

The usage screen is my own account. The plan moves, the Astra burn and the 2% day are my word. I haven’t used Pro 500 or Ultrafast.
