Claude Ultra Plan (2026): Max 20x Renamed, the 5-Hour Limit Is Gone, and What Changed on My Account

By Chris Alarcon
Short answer
My account switched to Ultra, and I just have a weekly limit now, no five-hour limit. My week feels longer, not shorter. For someone on the $100 Max plan, my answer is no: the plan doesn’t really change, so be smarter about your usage first.
Claude Ultra Plan (2026): Max 20x Renamed, the 5-Hour Limit Is Gone, and What Changed on My Account

My account shows Ultra and a weekly bar

Here are the two screens from my account tonight. Usage has one bar marked This week, at 42%. There is no Current session bar above it.

Chris's Claude desktop Settings > Usage on November 1, 2026: Ultra, This week at 42% used, resetting Thursday at 8 AM, with no Current session or five-hour bar My Ultra usage screen, November 1, 2026. Weekly bar only.

Chris's Claude desktop Settings > Billing on November 1, 2026: Ultra plan, monthly API credit of $200, and October 15 paid invoice of $200; account and payment details blurred My Ultra plan and $200 paid invoice, November 1, 2026.

Anthropic changed the names and removed a limit

Anthropic announced the change on October 30, at 1:29 p.m. ET. Existing subscribers don’t need to do anything:

Here’s the current split on Anthropic’s pricing page, checked November 1:

PlanMaxUltra
Previous nameMax 5xMax 20x
Monthly web price$100$200
Five-hour limit5x ProNone for verified accounts; temporary limit otherwise
Weekly limit5x Pro10x Pro

Monthly API credits$100$200

Ultra includes everything in Max. For the longer buying decision, the evergreen Max vs Ultra comparison keeps the old plan names connected to the new ones. The AI Plan Tracker tracks the wider subscription changes.

The old 20x name described the five-hour limit

Mike Overell, who leads product for Claude subscriptions, explained the mismatch in his October 30 post.

When the top plan launched in April 2025, it had only a five-hour limit. That allowance was 20 times Pro’s, which gave Max 20x its name.

When Anthropic added weekly limits, Overell says, “we set them to 10x Pro’s”. The five-hour allowance kept its original multiplier. The weekly allowance was never the number in the old name.

He acknowledged that some newer users assumed the name applied to both: “We could have done better here, and I’m sorry.”

The rename drops a multiplier that didn’t describe the week. Removing the short-window limit is the change for verified accounts.

My week feels longer, and I have two guesses

Asked whether my week felt shorter, my answer was: “No, man. It’s longer.”

“But my suspicion is that because Duet is now bundling into your subscription, they’re giving you more.”

That’s my guess. Anthropic’s announcement says the weekly limits are unchanged. Its Duet launch page says Duet shares the same usage limits as the rest of Claude; it doesn’t describe a separate allowance.

I also said: “At the same time we’ve been optimizing our things, so that could be it too.”

Those are my two guesses about how the week feels. Neither is a measured before-and-after usage comparison.

I wouldn’t move up from Max for the rename

My answer to someone on $100 Max: “No. The plan doesn’t really change. So I just tell them to be smarter about your usage, man.”

Start with Claude usage limits explained. Check which limit you reach and what uses it before changing plans.

Newer Ultra accounts wait for automatic verification

If your Ultra account still shows a session bar, the rollout has an account check. Anthropic’s Ultra help page says verification uses factors such as account and payment history. Phone verification at checkout is a separate step.

Overell’s verification reply says it’s automatic, there’s no submission process yet, and you’ll get an email when the limit is removed.

To check your own account, open Settings > Usage. Anthropic says an absent Current session bar means the account is verified. That is the screen to check before assuming your account has the same change as mine.

FAQ

Is Claude Max 20x gone?

The name is gone. Anthropic renamed Max 20x to Ultra on October 30, 2026. Existing subscribers move automatically; Max 5x is now Max.

Did the price change?

No. Max remains $100 a month and Ultra remains $200 at Anthropic’s web pricing.

Does Ultra have a 5-hour limit?

Verified Ultra accounts don’t. Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until verification. Weekly limits still apply.

How do I get verified?

Anthropic handles it automatically using account and payment history, among other factors. There’s no application to submit. You’ll get an email when the temporary limit is removed.

Is the weekly limit 10x or 20x?

Ultra’s weekly limit is 10x Pro. Overell says that was the weekly allowance from its introduction; 20x described the five-hour limit.

Should I upgrade from Max to Ultra?

My answer to a $100 Max user is no, not for the rename. Be smarter about your usage first.

Where this comes from

The account observations and verdict come from my November 1 riff. Both screens show my own account that night, with private details blurred. Product facts come from Anthropic’s linked pages and posts, checked November 1. The longer-feeling week is my impression, not a measured increase.
