Claude Pricing (2026): $0, $20, $100 or $200, and the Two Bills Past Your Plan

By Chris Alarcon
Short answer
Claude costs $0 on Free, $20 a month on Pro, and $100 or $200 a month on Max. Claude Code has no price of its own. It comes with every paid plan and drains the same meter as your chats.

Claude Pricing (2026): $0, $20, $100 or $200, and the Two Bills Past Your Plan

So what do I tell a friend who has never paid for AI? I think it depends. A subscription is the best move, because it’s a subsidized cost, and all that means is you’re not gonna go over that cost.

Start with the free, then twenty dollars, and work your way up.

I’m on Max 20x myself. I don’t ever switch on the pay-past-the-limit option, and my usage screens, further down, show it off.

Every Claude plan is a flat monthly price, Claude Code included

Prices come from Claude’s pricing page, checked October 23, 2026. Team credits pool into one balance capped at $500 a month, per Anthropic’s API credits article.

Free gets Sonnet and Haiku. Opus starts on Pro. Max is mostly more room: Anthropic sells it as 5x or 20x Pro’s usage, plus higher output limits and priority access when Claude is busy. The one model change is Fable, Anthropic’s top model, which Max includes and Pro only gets through usage credits.

Anthropic publishes no message count for any plan. Its own pricing FAQ says “there’s no fixed message count,” so any number you see quoted is someone’s estimate.

Claude Code pricing is your plan’s pricing, from the same pool

Claude Code doesn’t get its own bucket. Anthropic’s pricing FAQ: “Claude Code is included in all paid plans. It shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan.”

The Claude Code plan article spells out the meters. Pro and Max have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and “Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable.” All of it counts chat and Claude Code together.

esperent put it plainly on Hacker News: “There’s no ‘Claude Code subscription’. There’s just a subscription for all Claude services at once.”

One trap does send people a surprise bill. If a setup guide had you save an Anthropic API key on your computer as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, Anthropic says Claude Code “will use this API key for authentication instead of your Claude subscription,” and you pay API rates.

The fix from the same article:

  • Remove the saved key: unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and delete the line that sets it in your shell profile.
  • Restart Claude Code and sign in with only your Pro or Max account.
  • Say no when Claude Code offers to keep going on API credits.
  • Check what’s left with the /status command.

Past the plan there are two more bills, and I skip the first one

The first is usage credits: the switch that lets you keep working past the wall and pay for it; the second is the API (pay-per-use). Older Anthropic pages call usage credits extra usage. Same switch, new name.

No, I don’t ever switch to extra usage. I always wait for the reset. 200 is a lot, bro.

My Claude desktop Settings, Usage pane on Max 20x, October 23, 2026: Usage credits $0, the switch to keep using Claude past a plan limit turned off, a Buy more usage button marked Up to 30% off, and a monthly spend limit showing $0.00 of $80 this month with auto-reload off My Claude usage credits on Max 20x, October 23, 2026: off, $0 spent.

Here’s how the bill works when you do turn it on, per Anthropic’s usage credits article:

  • Trigger: once you hit a plan limit, requests switch to pay-as-you-go.
  • Price: “standard API rates.” My screen shows “Up to 30% off” on the buy button, so check the real price at checkout.
  • Controls: a Buy more usage button, a monthly spend limit, and an auto-reload switch, all on the same Usage screen.
  • Coverage: chat and Claude Code both, as extra charges on top of your subscription.

That last line is the one correction to my answer up top. The plan is a hard cap only while this switch stays off.

So when would I flip it? If there’s a clear purpose and an ROI, yes. If you’re spending a dollar and you’re getting five back, you’ll pay that all day.

If you have the budget and a specific use case, like an app that makes you money, spend it. If you’re just gonna spend it because you’re impatient, that’s just silly, man. Unless you’ve got money to burn. I just wait.

The Max API credits are real money, but they don’t pay for Claude Code

The credits are new, and they are separate from your plan. On October 7, 2026, Anthropic’s release notes announced monthly API credits for Max and Team: $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 a month on Max 20x.

The rules matter more than the amount:

  • What they cover: the Claude API, the Playground in the Claude Console, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK.
  • What they don’t: “Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop, or web,” usage credits past your limits, and Claude through Amazon, Google Cloud or Microsoft.
  • They don’t raise your limits. Anthropic: “The credits don’t change your usage limits in Claude, Claude Code, or Claude Cowork.” (Claude Cowork is Claude’s desktop agent mode.)
  • They expire. “Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.”
  • You claim them. Settings, then Billing, then Link organization, which connects a Claude Console account. The offer appears after seven days on the plan.

When the credits run out and you haven’t bought more, API calls stop until next month. Anthropic says that usage “is never charged to your Claude plan.”

Yes, I’ve claimed mine. It’s a good-for-now backup for when I run out of usage, which tends to happen a lot.

I’ve already handed off some grunt tasks to it, and it burns easily like 70 to over 100. It saves me maybe one to five percent usage. So I just don’t feel like it’s the best use of it.

I’m still finding the use case. People are complaining about the usage. I just think there’s an efficiency thing. I don’t think the company’s out there to get you.

What the top Max plan looks like on my own meter

This is my Claude usage screen from September 5, 2026. Three meters, all shared with Claude Code.

My Claude Settings, Usage on Max (20x), September 5, 2026: current session 32% used and resetting in 4 hours 13 minutes, weekly all models 54% used, Fable 51% used, both weekly meters resetting Thursday 9:00 AM, and a banner saying the weekly Claude Code limit was 50% higher through September 13 My Claude usage meters on Max 20x, September 5, 2026.

The Fable meter is the one to watch. On that day it sat at 51% while the all-models week was at 54%. Fable runs on its own weekly meter, and Max caps it at up to half your weekly limits.

Max isn’t a promise of a number, either. Two people on Hacker News, same plan, opposite experiences:

  • aaronbrethorst, October 17: “I’m on a Claude Max 20x plan ($200/month). I expected to see about 15% usage of the plan overnight on the task but it was more like 5-6%?”
  • aleqs, October 19: “I max out my 20x max plan in 1-2 days at this point.”

How I climbed from Pro to Max, and whether it was worth it, lives in Claude Pro vs Max. Already sold on Max and stuck on the tier? That’s Claude Max 5x vs 20x.

The Claude API charges per token, and that adds up fast

If you sign in with an API key instead of a plan, you pay for every token, per Anthropic’s API pricing.

ModelInput per 1M tokensOutput per 1M tokens
Fable 5.1$10$50
Opus 5.5$4$20
Sonnet 5.5$2$10
Haiku 5.5, prompts up to 100K tokens$0.10$0.50
Haiku 5.5, prompts over 100K tokens$0.50$2.50

Standard rates, checked October 23, 2026. The Batch API takes 50% off if you can wait for the answer.

My take, and it’s an estimate, not a measurement: for the same exact task you’re going to pay probably like five to 10x more on the API. Anthropic doesn’t publish a plan-versus-API comparison, so treat that as one heavy user’s read.

If you have no budget control and you’re just spending with AI, it can easily add up to hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars very quick, depending on the model you use.

My rule: let the plan be your ceiling

  • You’ve never paid for AI: Free. Find one job Claude does for you first.
  • You use it most days and keep hitting the wall: Pro. Pay yearly only once you’re sure you’ll stay a while. Is Claude Pro worth it runs that call.
  • The wall stops real work every week: Max 5x, and watch one normal week before you think about 20x.
  • You live in Claude Code all day: Max 20x. The API credits are a side bonus, not more room.
  • A guide handed you an API key: check that ANTHROPIC_API_KEY isn’t set before you blame your plan for the bill.

The plan price is the most you’ll pay, as long as you leave the usage credits switch off.

When I hit the wall, I don’t pay to skip it. I just wait. Start with the free, then twenty dollars, and work your way up.

Where this comes from

Every price and rule here is Anthropic’s, read off its pricing page, help center and API docs on October 23, 2026. What’s mine is my Max 20x account, my usage screens and my rule on usage credits.

I’ve claimed the Max API credits but haven’t run Team, Enterprise or a Free account for this page. Those rows are Anthropic’s word, not my test.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Claude cost?

Claude has four personal prices. Free is $0. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay for the year up front. Max is $100 a month for 5x Pro's usage or $200 a month for 20x, and Max is billed monthly only. Team seats start at $25 a month, or $20 a month billed annually.

How much is Claude Code?

Claude Code has no separate price. It is included on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and it is not on the Free plan. Anthropic says Claude Code and regular Claude chats share the same usage limits, so both draw from one pool. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set on your computer, Claude Code bills that key at API rates instead of your plan.

How much is the Claude Max plan, and can I pay for it yearly?

Max 5x is $100 a month and Max 20x is $200 a month. Anthropic's Max help article says the plan is currently available as a monthly subscription only. Both tiers add priority access at busy times, access to Fable (Anthropic's top model) for up to 50% of weekly limits, and monthly API credits of $100 or $200 for the Claude Platform.

Do the Claude Max API credits work in Claude Code?

No. Anthropic says the monthly API credits do not apply to interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, and do not pay for usage credits past your plan limits. They cover the Claude API, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.

What happens when I hit my Claude usage limit?

You can wait for the reset, upgrade, or turn on usage credits on a paid plan. Usage credits switch you to pay-as-you-go at standard API rates once you hit a plan limit, up to a monthly spend limit you set. Older Anthropic pages call this extra usage. They are separate from your subscription and show up as extra charges.

How much does the Claude API cost?

Per million tokens, Fable 5.1 is $10 input and $50 output, Opus 5.5 is $4 and $20, Sonnet 5.5 is $2 and $10, and Haiku 5.5 is $0.10 and $0.50 for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. The Batch API takes 50% off. Prices are from Anthropic's API pricing docs, checked October 23, 2026.
